Throughout its long history St Kilda Cemetery has become the final resting place for some of Australia’s most notable identities. Personalities from all walks of life, including early pioneers and politicians through to famous sporting identities, rest within the cemetery’s grounds.

- Baron Sir Ferdinand Jacob Heinrich Von Mueller – Botanist
- Ross Herman Warneke – Journalist
- Matilda Ann (Tilly) Weston – Founder of Association for Advancement of the Blind (Vision Australia)
Under legislative process, on 1 March 2010 The Cheltenham & Regional Cemeteries Trust and The Trustees of the Necropolis Springvale were merged to create the Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust. Melbourne General Cemetery is now one of the sites administered by that Trust.
